The storyline in general terms.
In the story, Penny, a college sophomore at The University of New Castle, Wilmington Campus, Delaware, finds herself drawn to a charming man she meets in a coffee shop. As their flirtation turns into a passionate affair, Penny discovers that the man is actually her communications professor and that he has secrets that threaten to derail their relationship. Told from Penny’s first-person perspective, the story delves into her innermost thoughts and desires as she navigates the temptation of forbidden love.
What did I like about the book?
I enjoy Ivy’s writing style; her descriptions of the more intense moments are great, and I love the romance. It’s very easy sometimes to forget that stuff like this happens; people fall in love with others they shouldn’t.
The relationship between Tyler and Penny in the story is endearing and realistic, making it easy to root for them as a couple. Penny’s tendency to overthink things is relatable, especially for those who have experienced the emotional turmoil of being a teenager. Her vulnerability and susceptibility to outside influences make her a complex and interesting character. It’s natural to wonder what could have happened had she and Tyler taken their friendship to the next level.
“I wasn’t just fucking my professor. I was in deep. I loved him. I’m in love with my Comm professor.”
― Ivy Smoak, Temptation
What would have made it better?
The book tested my willpower as I struggled to resist the temptation to put it down. The characters were disappointingly one-dimensional, lacking the depth and complexity I crave in a good read. To make matters worse, Penny’s immaturity was a constant source of frustration, as she seemed to believe everything she was told or read without question.
What didn’t I enjoy in the book?
The novel in question presented a tempting read but ultimately fell short of earning my full admiration. While I did award it 3.5 stars for its potential and being the author’s debut work, I couldn’t help but notice weaknesses in the writing and a scattered plot. Additionally, I found it difficult to fully invest in the characters and their journeys, as I found myself hoping they would make different choices than the ones presented.
Will I read another book by this author?
I will, and I have. I’ve completed the series.
