The storyline in general terms

The protagonist of the story, Auburn, is haunted by her past, which is inextricably linked to the family of her deceased boyfriend. Despite moving to Dallas to be closer to them five years after Adam’s death, she can’t seem to escape the hold that her past has on her. In need of extra money, Auburn stumbles upon an art gallery called ‘Confess’ where she meets Owen. However, their meeting is not the first time they have crossed paths, and Owen has secrets of his own. The story explores themes of grief, addiction, control, and the journey towards taking back one’s life.

What did I like about the book?

Confess by Colleen Hoover is a gripping emotional rollercoaster that had me hooked from the very first page. The twists and turns in the story kept me on the edge of my seat, never knowing what to expect next. I found myself rooting for Owen and Auburn to realise their true feelings for each other, even though their journey was emotional and at times frustrating. Auburn was a strong young woman trying to move forward from her past and secure a better future for herself. The art gallery concept was beautiful and added depth to the story. While part of me wished Owen had been honest with Auburn about Adam, another part of me understood why he kept the truth hidden. Overall, I couldn’t fault this book and would love to experience it again for the first time.

What didn’t I enjoy in the book?

I must confess, the relationship between Auburn and Owen was a slow burn that kept me on the edge of my seat. However, I couldn’t help but feel uneasy about Trey’s controlling and manipulative behaviour. He seemed to have no regard for Auburn or his own brother Adam, using any situation to his advantage, even if it meant hurting those closest to him. It was clear that his loyalty lay only with his mother.
