Book Setting – time and place
I love a UK setting! South East with a little bit of Newcastle.
The storyline, in general terms
Abbie and Jake’s whirlwind romance began at a friend’s party, but their love story was cut short when Jake’s father forced him to leave the country due to his shady business dealings. Despite their deep connection, Jake felt he had no choice but to go. Abbie was heartbroken and struggled to move on, while Jake promised to return. However, he abruptly cut off all communication and ignored her attempts to reach out. The sudden end to their relationship rocked Abbie’s world and left her wondering what went wrong.

In the small town setting, Jake and Abbie’s love story takes a dramatic turn when Jake, now a famous rock star, returns to win back Abbie’s heart after ghosting her eight years prior. However, Abbie has moved on and is now a dedicated primary school teacher. Despite the odds stacked against them, Jake is determined to make things right and win Abbie back. The story is set in the UK, outside the bustling city of London, and has all the makings of a cute YA romance with many cliches and swoon-worthy moments.
The characters and their development.
Abigail (Abbie) Daniels
Abbie starts as a shy and insecure girl, often hiding in the shadows at parties and believing she is plain and unremarkable. However, she blossoms into a more confident and charismatic young woman as she connects with Jake. When Jake leaves, Abbie is left heartbroken and struggling to move on, but eventually, she becomes more emotionally stable and mature.
Throughout the book, Abbie undergoes a significant transformation in terms of her character development. Initially, she is portrayed as being confident and in love with Jake, but when he suddenly disappears, she becomes angry and confused. While her character arc may not be as dramatic as some, Abbie’s growth and development are a testament to her strength and resilience.
Jake Greyson
At the beginning of the story, Jake is introduced as a brooding musician with a complicated past. However, as the plot unfolds, we quickly discover that he is a kind-hearted and passionate teenager who simply wants an everyday life. Despite being legally an adult, Jake feels obligated to follow his father’s wishes until he can support himself. He sets his sights on Abbie and spends the next eight years trying to win her back, showing his determination and commitment to what he wants. Through his character development, we see that Jake is not just a stereotype but a complex and multifaceted individual.
The process of character development is evident in the transformation of the protagonist. As the story progresses, he undergoes a significant change, becoming more assertive and standing up for himself and his loved ones. However, this newfound confidence is not without its flaws, as his past experiences have left him with a short fuse. The most significant growth occurs when he reunites with Abbie, shedding his rockstar persona and embracing his roots as a small-town boy. This evolution demonstrates the complexity of character development and the impact of personal experiences on one’s growth.
What did I like about the book?
This book will rock your world (literally)! It’s a heartwarming story about a girl and a guy who fall in love during the summer, only to be separated for eight long years. I was expecting a cute high school romance, but it was so much more than that. Set in a small town in England, the story is full of charm and romance.
Abbie’s insecurities are relatable to most 16-year-olds, and Jake is a broody musician with a kind heart and a passion for life. It’s refreshing to see a teenage character who is not afraid to show his emotions. I found myself wanting to be Abbie in the first part of the book, but as the story progressed, I was glad I wasn’t her. The last 20% of the book had me blinking away tears. This is a must-read for anyone who loves a good romance!
“I don’t mean physically. Be gentle with my heart, Jake. It’s not as tough as it used to be.”
B Crowhurst – Rock Your World
This book has everything; second-chance romance, rock star, teenager sweethearts, small-town romance, and I loved skipping along in teenage bliss with them. I only wish I could have read this when I was 18!
What would have made it better?
As a writer, I had a couple of annoying little issues. Based in the UK, I loved it! However, a few things bugged me. We don’t use parking lots, trunks or semesters (often) in this country. It was also a little irritating that it was written in American/English.
I was grateful there was no mention of a sidewalk! But that bugged me a little. I’m assuming it’s written for either the American audience or internationally. It’s amazingly written, though, the author really throws a few punches in places, and my heart was in my mouth 80% in!
While I’m thinking about it, where did the letter go? Jake said he wrote a letter, but it disappeared without a trace, and neither questioned it! Also, having known Harry and his family for decades, he would know their address and, more than likely, phone numbers! Sorry, I know that’s the plot, but I must mention it!
What didn’t work for me in the book?
Nothing! It’s great. Some will probably disagree, but my heart was singing a happy song most of the time!
Overall opinion and recommendation.
Overall, I loved this book and would highly recommend it to others. The characters were well-developed and relatable, and the plot kept me engaged from beginning to end. The pacing was a little slow, to begin with, but by around 30%, it picked up, with enough action and suspense to keep me on the edge of my seat without feeling rushed. The author’s writing style was also written for the YA audience, so not overly complicated. I can’t wait to read more from this author and highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a captivating and well-written read. I’d love to read it again for the first time!
Make it into a movie or a tv show!
Will I read another book by this author?
Absolutely! I only wish this book wasn’t a standalone and a series! I could have read about Jake and Abbie for the next month!
