Book setting

The University of New Castle, Wilmington Campus, Delaware.

The storyline in general terms.

In this book, the story picks up where Temptation left off, with James discovering that Penny is not a senior but only 18. As a result, James distances himself from her, and Penny finds solace in Tyler’s company, which creates more complications for her. When James and Penny finally reconcile, his ex-wife Isabella returns, and new secrets threaten to destroy their relationship.

James and Penny’s relationship has been revealed to the public, but facing the backlash seems to be a challenge, especially for Penny.

What did I like about the book?

I preferred this to the first book. I liked the more playful side of James.

I felt terrible for Penny. She got a lot of flack for sleeping with her Professor, but she also didn’t see what was wrong with doing it. She was young and in love, but it had been weeks, and she made it sound like it had been years. She cost him his job and reputation; although, towards the end, I believed she understood what it all meant, part of it annoyed me.

I will say, though, that the writing improved from the first book. I didn’t skim-read as much and understood James’ backstory more.

This book did make me go aww a few times, and there were little hints of Tyler. I gave it four stars because it felt more grounded than the first.

“Why would I? No one’s ever looked at me the way that you’re looking at me right now.”

Ivy Smoak – Addiction.

What would have made it better?

I love Rob! We needed more Rob and right in the middle! Bringing him in at the end made it a little flat for me, yet another character with a thing for Penny. The banter between the three of them was great, though!

It made more sense if Tyler had found Penny on the street and not Brandon; it would have annoyed James and gotten the angle the author needed. Plus, it would have been cute. For some reason, Brandon made me feel quite ‘ick.

What I didn’t like in the book?

Brandon was only really bought in to make James jealous. Why are all these guys kissing Penny? She’s attractive, but it got slightly annoying in the end. He was a character we didn’t need, as Tyler was already making James jealous. It would have made more sense if Rob riled his jealousy, perhaps?

The time skipping was irritating – they’d be in their apartment at lunchtime and, the next minute, head out the door for the evening without any scene change. People would also turn up to hang out and say, ten minutes later, I’m off out. Like what?

Her parents’ response to her dating her Professor—One minute, they are angry; the next minute, they are welcoming him to the family! I’m a parent, and if my daughter dated her teacher, geez, I wouldn’t be so understanding that quickly. I get it, but at least a little angst would have made it believable, especially if it made Penny question her relationship.

Will I read another book by this author?

I will, and I have. I’ve completed the series.
